Safety Information for Schools

Volunteer with StudentsStudent safety is everybody’s business, and it includes being aware of everyone on campus and effectively training staff members about the effective use of school volunteers and the guidelines to follow when they are on your campus.

The District has guidelines concerning volunteer activities and security clearance procedures to be used in all schools. These guidelines require the annual application and background screening of all volunteers before they are allowed to serve and limits the types of activities volunteers should be asked to do. The Security Tracking and Screening System (STAR) performs automatic screening each time a visitor or volunteer enters the campus.

An orientation should be provided for staff members on the effective use of volunteers and the process for recruiting and placing school volunteers. Included in the staff orientation should be the security recruitments for each type of volunteer.

In conjunction with the staff orientation, school volunteers should also be informed of the expectations and limitations placed on them. This is traditionally done at a welcome back event early in the school year. Volunteers recruited later in the year should also receive an orientation. These orientations may be one-on-one or in small group settings.

Refer to Security Levels in the left navigation panel for information on the Security Levels for Broward County Public Schools. The Volunteer Services Department assists our program managers by providing these helpful resources designed to assist in each school’s safety plan.
