Safety FAQs

Safety FAQsAre pre-school children allowed to accompany a volunteer who is on campus to perform volunteer duties?
No, having a very young child in a classroom may interrupt class procedures, disrupts the students and prevents the volunteer from giving full attention to the work. We suggest that you can still help the school by making arrangements to do work at home.

Can a volunteer ever be left alone with students in a classroom setting, even for a very short length of time?
No, school volunteers are not employees of the school and are specifically prohibited from ever supervising students.

This individual has served as a very satisfactory volunteer for years, but has not had time to complete the volunteer application for this school year.  Can this individual be assigned to volunteer duties before the application is processed?
No, school volunteers must complete the application and be approved before any volunteer responsibilities are assigned.

My class is planning several field trips in the coming year.  What type of security level will my chaperones require?
All field trip chaperones must complete a volunteer application and be approved through the STAR system’s security clearance process. This is known as a Level 1 screening and qualifies for most common volunteer duties.

However, a limited number of volunteer duties require the additional process of being FBI fingerprinted. These duties include chaperones for overnight field trips, mentoring and volunteer athletic coaching. Instructions for acquiring a Level 2 clearance is provided in Volunteer Management for Teachers. Other helpful documents are located in the Resource Library.

I was fingerprinted last year as an overnight field trip chaperone. Do I have to be fingerprinted again this year?
No, you may not need to be fingerprinted again. If the District is holding satisfactory prints, with your permission, these prints can be resubmitted to the FBI.  However you MUST:
1. Submit an online volunteer application for this school year.
2. Submit the Level 2 Rescreen Form, also known as VECHS.  The Staff Liaison for Volunteers may assist in verifying the existence of your fingerprint record.
