When Melissa Butcher sees a student need at Sheridan Park Elementary in Hollywood, she asks herself if volunteer power can be used to fill it.  If the answer is yes, she gets busy.

Wanting to expand the children’s art education, Ms. Butcher learned about the District’s Meet the Masters Program which incorporates art history, social studies and mathematics into classroom presentations given by school volunteers. Ms. Butcher successfully coordinated the program’s implementation, making a special effort to train the next generation of program managers to make sure students benefit from the program in years to come.  Ms. Butcher followed the same plan in implementing Math SuperStars (Sunshine Math) and her own special program for working parents who wish to volunteer.  The Helping Hands at Home Program, allows parents unable to volunteer during the school day to help teachers from home.  Helping Hands’ activities include creating bulletin board decorations, collecting items for class projects, and, of course, scoring Math SuperStars’ worksheets.

The affect of Melissa Butcher’s personal volunteer hours is immeasurable, but her planning and forethought for the future of Sheridan Park’s volunteer programs is truly amazing.  Her personal devotion and administrative skills will benefit students for years.
