Our goal is to promote mental health through this children’s prevention program. LTC mentors serve as non-judgmental adult friends at weekly one-on-one meetings where they engage children through play and conversation. This active listening model is not an academic tutoring program. Listeners help enhance the children’s self-esteem, improve their communication skills and assist in teaching other skills such as decision-making and problem-solving. Listeners spend 30 minutes with each child and typically work individually with 3 or 4 children on the day and time of their choice. Most students in the LTC program attend elementary school however services are provided to middle school students on a limited basis.
Listener volunteers come from all walks of life. They are men and women, young and old, single, divorced or widowed, and they represent the ethnic diversity of our community. If you are interested in becoming a Listener or finding out more about the program, please contact LTC .
