Wanted: A Few Good Men
For the first time in the history of the organization, the second male National PTA president elect is an African-American. The PTA president in Broward County is also male. On the first day of school more than 36,090 men – fathers, uncles, grandfathers and other male adults took their children to school. Approximately 31, 733 males attended open houses or orientations during the week prior to the start of the 2011-2012 school year. While these number reflect a decrease from the previous year, student enrollment on the first day of school declined by 4,112 students as well.
Clearly increasing numbers of men are becoming more actively involved in the education of our youth. The rewards are many. Both girls and boys benefit from the caring attention and support of a male role model. Mentoring is a great way for men to get involved in their local schools. Too often men are interested in volunteering in schools but are wary of the types of activities they may be expected to do.
Mentoring is simple and easy!
The main thing is to make the commitment to spend quality time with a student in a Broward County school.
