JANUARY
IS NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH
Back
in 2004,
George Bush proclaimed the month of January, National Mentoring
Month. This was to honor and recognize, "... the dedicated
individuals who volunteer their time to mentor young people."
In that White House press release, the President of the United
States encouraged more citizens to give back to their communities
as mentors. If you are interested in Mentoring in Broward County

YOUTH
MENTORING
Most
of us can recall someone who motivated us as children and helped
us to imagine who we could become. Many of the students in our
schools can benefit enormously from the support and encouragement
of a caring adult. Mentors change lives by serving as positive
role models and helping young people reach their full potential.
And the rewards don’t end there. Mentors
tell us that the relationships they develop with the students fuel
their enthusiasm for remaining actively involved in the schools.
The
primary goal of the Broward County School’s Youth Mentoring
Programs department is to increase student achievement by providing
mentors to deserving students and by coordinating and supporting
various mentoring organizations in Broward County. We need your
help to reach the many students who have the potential to excel
but require that extra push that only you can provide.
Mentors
help students realize that they can succeed. With the support and
guidance of a mentor, students learn the importance of staying
in school, setting goals, and making positive decisions. Students
with a mentor are more likely to experience success, greater academic
achievement and improved self-esteem.
Make
a commitment today to meet with a deserving student in his/her
school for one hour a week, during school hours throughout the
school year. Becoming a mentor is easy. You will need to complete
an application, to attend a two-hour training/orientation
session and pass the security background clearance process. You
will then be ready to mentor a child in the school of your choice.
