Empty Bowls
In line with the Souper Bowl of Caring’s mission statement, to utilize Super Bowl Sunday to inspire and mobilize youth to fight hunger and poverty, Broward County Public Schools will be encouraging schools to raise money, or do a food drive, to support the local not-for-profit organization of their choice, that helps stamp out hunger.
One of the ways for schools to raise money would be through an Empty Bowls fund raiser. A Michigan high school arts teacher formed the Empty Bowls idea in 1990 that began as a class project. Students were encouraged to create ceramic bowls for a fund-raising meal event. Guests gave a suggested donation of at least $10 for a bowl of soup and bread and kept a bowl created by a student as a reminder of hunger in the world. Soon after, the Imagine/Render Group was formed to run the project as well as other related projects and seminars or workshops. This “project of inclusion” has no religious, political, racial, etc. boundaries. Please refer to the Empty Bowls Web site at for more information.
If you would like more information on how to do an Empty Bowls fund raiser, please review the brief “how to” manual (PDF).
The Miami Dolphins have offered to be involved in the Empty Bowls program by providing prizes for participating schools. They will award one elementary, one middle and one high school that have raised the most money for their charity of choice.
The award for the elementary level will include a pep rally visit from the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders, alumni players, and TD - the Miami Dolphin mascot at the winning school. Also, the winning class will receive tickets to a Miami Dolphin game. At the game a few class delegates will be able to go on field with their advisor for a pre-game presentation. At the middle and high school level, the winning schools will receive a player and alumni visit at the school and will also receive tickets to a game. These students will also be able to send class delegates onto the field with their advisor for a pre-game presentation.
In order to determine the winning schools, if your school would like to participate, you will need to registe. Please refer to the Empty Bowls Web site at for more information.
